Prof. Holthausen, in Anglia XVIII, 293-331, reprints two medical treatises preserved in a Stockholm manuscript which was first printed by G. Stephens in 1844 in the 30th volume of Archaeologia. The same poems are found in the Add. Ms. 17,866 in the British Museum, fol. 5a-21b, but in a text so different that it would be impossible to print merely a list of variants. The order of the poems is just reversed in the Add. Ms. from that in the Stockholm Ms., the prescriptions following the medico-botanical poem. I have numbered the two as one, as they occur in the Ms.

It is a beautiful manuscript, written on parchment with great care. There is practically no attempt at adornment, aside from the rubrications. The catalogue says it belongs to the fourteenth century, and on the inside leaf is written: 'This M. S. seems to belong to the time of the first or second Edward', i. e. 1272-1327. This, however seems at least one hundred fifty years too early. It shows many traces of northern dialect, but is not consistent.
